The internet has backed a woman after she claimed to have ruined dinner with a joke about her own bodily fluids with one commenter calling it “pretty funny.”
Posted in the 3.9 million-strong “Am I the A**hole” Reddit forum, user u/Cheap_Extension5015 shared the story of the joke that the poster said ruined a family dinner.
Since being uploaded onto the forum on Saturday, April 30, the post —which can be viewed here—has managed to rack up some 15,900 upvotes.
According to a January 2022 study published in the Evolutionary Psychological Science journal, both men and women said they experienced greater conflict with their mothers-in-law compared with their own moms, at 44 percent and 39 percent respectively.

The poster explained their in-laws had been invited to dinner but had stated they had a very specific requirement that the food was organic.
In the post, the user said: “I cooked up a few dishes, including French onion soup. The soup was a hit. His mom asked me for a recipe and I jokingly said that the secret ingredient is my tears (because onions).
“His mom stopped eating, shared at me. I tried to ease the tension by explaining that it was a joke, but she didn’t respond. After a few minutes, they got up and left.”
The user continued: “I knew she was strict about knowing where her food came from, making sure they’re organic and non-GMO and such. We actually went grocery shopping with her before dinner as reassurance. But I didn’t realize an obvious onion joke would set her off. My husband has been trying to get her to talk to me, but she refuses.”
Unsurprisingly, the post attracted hundreds of comments with many expressing their exhaustion at the mother-in-law’s behavior.
One Reddit user said: “NTA [not the a**hole]. That’s actually a pretty funny joke and even if she didn’t understand it initially, she should’ve been receptive to your explanation. She sounds like a pain.”
Another commenter added: “I’m exhausted for you. Has she never heard the idiom of putting your ‘blood, sweat and tears’ into something? You obviously didn’t put bodily fluids into her food.
“She’s either always like this or she’s doubling down because she doesn’t want to admit that she didn’t get the joke.”
A third posted: “NTA. Could she have been p**sed your food was better so looking for any excuse to leave cause she’s jealous?”
