In the digital age, emojis have become an integral part of our daily communication. These small, expressive icons help us convey emotions, ideas, and nuances that words alone sometimes can’t capture. The excitement is palpable as eight brand new emojis are coming – but who decides which ones make the cut? This process is fascinating and involves meticulous consideration and a lot more than you might think.
The Unicode Consortium: The Emoji Gatekeepers
At the heart of emoji creation is the Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organization that oversees the standardization of characters across different platforms and devices. This group of tech experts and linguists ensures that text, symbols, and emojis are represented consistently on screens worldwide.
How It All Begins
The journey of a new emoji starts with an idea. Anyone can propose a new emoji by submitting a formal proposal to the Unicode Consortium. These proposals are detailed documents that outline the emoji’s intended use, relevance, and potential impact on communication. Each submission must demonstrate that the proposed emoji would be widely used and fill a gap in the current emoji lexicon.
Criteria for New Emojis
Eight brand new emojis are coming – but who decides which ones make the cut? The Unicode Consortium evaluates each proposal based on several criteria. These include:
1. Compatibility
Proposed emojis should be compatible with existing ones. If a similar emoji already exists, the new one must add significant value or cover a new aspect of communication.
2. Expected Usage Level
An essential factor is how often the new emoji is expected to be used. Proposals must show that there is a demand for the emoji, supported by evidence such as search data, social media trends, and usage patterns.
3. Image Distinctiveness
The proposed emoji must be visually distinct and easily recognizable, even at a small size. It should be clear what the emoji represents without needing accompanying text.
4. Completeness
Emojis should be inclusive and representative of various aspects of life, cultures, and communities. Proposals that contribute to the diversity and inclusivity of the emoji set are highly favored.
The Review Process
Once a proposal is submitted, it undergoes a thorough review process by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee. This group of volunteers, comprising experts from various fields, scrutinizes each proposal for feasibility, relevance, and potential impact.
Public Feedback and Iteration
After initial reviews, some proposals are released for public feedback. This stage allows the broader community to weigh in on the new emojis, providing insights and opinions that can lead to further refinement of the proposals.
Approval and Implementation
After several rounds of reviews and revisions, the Unicode Consortium votes on the final set of new emojis. Once approved, these emojis are incorporated into the Unicode Standard, allowing tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft to implement them across their platforms.
